Jo takes on the Massive Murray Paddle

Jo, a profoundly deaf marathon paddler of 10 years is preparing to take on the 404km Massive Murray Paddle between November 19 - 23 to raise funds for Expression Australia.

Jo started paddling at Patterson Lakes Canoe Club and now paddles with both the Bellarine Paddlers and Geelong Canoe Club training to paddle the Massive Murray Paddle for the first time after much encouragement from her paddling friends.

In accepting this challenge, Jo has elected to raise funds for Expression Australia - the organisation that encouraged her to participate in the Deaf community learning about Deaf culture and Auslan (Australian Sign language). After developing her confidence, Jo studied a Bachelor of Applied Science without having a background in formal education.

Without the organisation's support and encouragement, Jo believes that she would never have developed her confidence to the level that it is now where she feels comfortable competing in marathon paddling races, swimming or  working in her current role as a visiting Teacher of the Deaf.

"I want to do something in return to say thank you and to enable the fantastic staff at Expression AUstralia to guide and encourage the young Deaf people to achieve thier goals."
