AEI Terms & Conditions
Last Updated: 22nd September 2025
1. Introduction
These Terms and Conditions (“Agreement”) govern your use of the Auslan Emergency Interpreting (AEI) app (the “App”), provided by the Victorian Deaf Society Ltd (Expression Australia). By accessing or using the App, you agree to comply with and be bound by this Agreement.
AEI is a free service designed to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) users in accessing emergency services through live Auslan interpreters.
⚠️ This App is intended for emergency use only. When you use AEI, it initiates a live video call with an Auslan interpreter, who will then connect with emergency services on your behalf. Do not use AEI in non-emergency situations.
2. Eligibility
The AEI App is intended to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) users in accessing emergency services. It is designed to be accessible to anyone in the DHH community who requires Auslan interpreting support during an emergency.
There are no age-based restrictions for using the App. However, AEI must be used only in genuine emergency situations and in accordance with the responsibilities outlined in these Terms.
3. Services Provided
The App enables real-time video communication between DHH users and Auslan interpreters, who assist in relaying information to emergency services such as ambulance, police, fire, or SES.
Key features of the AEI App include:
- Live video calls with Auslan interpreters.
- Optional location sharing, to assist emergency services in locating the user.
- No user account creation is required.
4. Account Creation
AEI does not require users to create an account or provide any personally identifiable information to use the service. The App is designed to enable anonymous access for emergency interpreting support.
In some situations, and only with your explicit consent, we may collect limited personal information to assist in follow-up or to improve service delivery. This is always optional.
5. User Responsibilities
By using the AEI App, you agree to:
- Use the App only for genuine emergency situations requiring communication support.
- Communicate respectfully and appropriately with interpreters and support staff.
- Not misuse the App for non-emergency, abusive, or disruptive behaviour.
- Provide accurate information during emergency calls to ensure timely and effective assistance.
6. Fees and Payments
The AEI App is provided free of charge. There are no subscription fees or payments required to access emergency Auslan interpreting through AEI.
7. Termination of Access
Expression Australia reserves the right to limit or block access to the App in the event of:
- Repeated misuse of the service.
- Deliberate abuse or inappropriate conduct toward interpreters.
- Any actions that compromise the safety or effectiveness of the emergency service.
AEI is intended for genuine emergencies only and should not be used for testing or prank calls.
8. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability
The App is provided “as is” and “as available.” While we strive to ensure the availability and reliability of the AEI service, we make no guarantees regarding uninterrupted access or error-free operation.
Expression Australia is not liable for:
- Delays in response from emergency services.
- Technical issues affecting connectivity or call quality.
- Any damages or losses resulting from use of the App.
Use of AEI does not guarantee that emergency services will be dispatched or that assistance will be immediate.
9. Intellectual Property
All content, design, logos, and technology used in the AEI App are the property of Expression Australia or its licensors and are protected by copyright and intellectual property laws. You may not reproduce, distribute, or modify any part of the App without prior written permission.
10. Privacy and Data Use
AEI is designed to respect your privacy. The App does not collect or store any personally identifiable information by default.
However, device-level permissions such as camera, microphone, and location are requested to enable video calls and help locate you during an emergency. Location data is only used during active calls and not stored unless you have explicitly consented.
For more details, please refer to our Privacy Policy (link to be inserted).
11. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution
These Terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia. Any disputes relating to these Terms will be handled through mediation or arbitration in accordance with Australian law.
12. Changes to Terms
We may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time. If significant changes are made, we will notify users through the App or other appropriate means. Continued use of the App after such updates indicates your acceptance of the revised terms.
