Staff Interpreter

We are looking for an Interpreter with NAATI Certified Provisional or Certified level to join the Expression Australia Interpreting team as a Staff Interpreter, working with priority in the Learning and Training area. This role will provide interpreting services internally with staff as well as within the program areas including NDIS Auslan in the home, Community Classes, Auslan in the workplace, LOTE in schools and kindergarten, as well as other learning programs. Additional interpreting opportunities will also be available through Auslan Connections that include community interpreting, VRI, translation and captioning.

Ideally you will have:

  • Minimum NAATI Certified Provisional or Certified Interpreter level
  • Minimum Diploma of Interpreting or demonstrated equivalence through experience. Advanced Diploma or Graduate Diploma of Auslan/English Interpreting preferred
  • Highly developed communication skills (written, signed and verbal)
  • Knowledge of learning pedagogy and/or experience working with children and families (desirable)
  • Ability to adapt to various cultures
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure

This position will require regular travel to various locations across Melbourne and Victoria, dependent on the location of each interpreting assignment. The position will also have a variable work schedule, which will include some out of hours work to be agreed upon.

Language Specialist

We are looking for someone with passion and a high level of skills in Auslan and Linguistics to step into the role of Language Specialist at Expression Australia. 

This position provides expert language advice around the use of Auslan in a range of contexts. The Language Specialist role makes significant contribution to the Learning and Training department and Expression Australia as a whole. This role includes the following functions: Auslan and deaf awareness training, translation, consultancy and deaf interpreting services to Expression Australia. This position will work closely with the Learning and Training team, Auslan Connections and the NDIS team.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Support the Learning and Training team to deliver Auslan Programs
  • Provide consultancy and translation to produce high-quality Sign Language Videos
  • Provide interpreting services for agreed assignments
  • Contribute to the development of interpreting, translating and learning and training programs

Ideally you will have:

  • Relevant linguistic, cultural and industry experience
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Deaf community, and Auslan learning pathways
  • Fluency in Auslan
  • Experience in teaching Auslan
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and well-developed communication skills (both signed and written)
  • Flexible and positive attitude to working in diverse teams with a range of learners and clients

Access Coordinator (Front Desk)

We are looking for two customer focused individuals who will be the first point of contact for Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people making inquiries and engaging with Expression Australia’s services.

In this interesting and varied role you will refer customers across our entire organisation, proactively identifying customer needs and providing pathways for a seamless customer service experience.     

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Be the first point of contact for customers in person and over the phone
  • Provide relevant information, advice and referral options
  • Perform a variety of administration tasks including managing multiple email inboxes, making appointments, processing payments and claims, banking and receipting, organising purchases, catering, postage and couriers and maintaining relevant databases
  • Demonstrate and sell assistive devices and accessories, including under the Victorian Smoke Alarm Scheme
  • Provide basic technology support, including hearing aids and device maintenance

Ideally you will have:

  • A positive and flexible approach to deal with a busy front desk environment
  • Excellent time management and communication skills
  • Demonstrated front office and administration skills
  • Proficiency in Auslan is desired but not essential as on-the-job training will be provided
  • Knowledge of Deaf and hard of hearing sectors an advantage

Expression of Interest - Casual Residential Support Workers

We are inviting expressions of interest for the role of Residential Support Worker. 

The Residential Support Worker position is casual and will be based at our Accommodation Services premises in Nunawading. At Accommodation Services, we provide 24/7 residential services to Deaf residents with various disabilities. 

As one of our Residential Supoort Workers, you will support residents to live the life they choose, which can involve support with accessing the community, developing independent living skills and attending personal appointments. You may also be responsible for the administration of resident's medication and there is a component of reporting, documentation and administration involved in the role. 

Ideally, you will have:

  • Extensive knowledge of Deaf culture, language and communication strategies
  • Native or native-like fluency in Auslan, with Auslan or Interpreting qualifications preferred
  • Minimum Certificate III in Community or Disability Services (preferred)
  • Current Driver's Licence
  • First Aid Level 2
  • Experience working with Expression Australia client cohorts, including people who are Deaf, hard of hearing, LGBTIQA+ or those with disabilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Experience in cooking meals and with food safety and hygiene
  • Awarness of appropriate and relevant technology and assistive devices
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a positive and flexible attitude, and the ability to resolve conflict quickly
  • Flexibility to complete sleepovers and weekend shifts

Experience working in the Deaf or hard of hearing community is highly desirable, including working with Deaf and hard of hearing people with complex support needs. 

Auslan competency or experience with communicating with people with a hearing loss is highly desirable and important for successful performance in the role. 

This role will provide support over a variety of hours including weekdays, evenings and weekends. 

 Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Support individuals to work through and achieve their identified goals
  • Provide support to increase skills, independence and participation within the community
  • Liaise with families, parents, support coordinators and other relevant community organisations, if required
  • Attend to administration tasks including case notes, claim forms and service improvement ideas

You should have either completed or have interest in completing a Certificate IV in Community Services, or have another relevant qualification and/or relevant work or life experience.

Expression Australia’s language services department, Auslan Connections, is seeking expressions of interest for casual interpreters, who are either NAATI Certified or at the Certified Provisional level. As an interpreter, you will provide effective delivery of Auslan interpreting, including ethical management of assignments for organisations, Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, and other clients.

 This role is ideal for interpreters motivated to provide a high quality service to the Deaf and wider community to allow access and clear communication in a wide variety of settings.

Preferred credentials
