Keep Cool in Yarra during a heatwave: Auslan

Did you know that more people die in Australia during heatwaves than in bushfires, storms, floods and cyclones combined?! This is why it’s so important to look after yourself and others in hot weather.

This summer, the Yarra City Council has been getting this message out in ways that are accessible and inclusive of its multi-linguistic community.

To reach Yarra’s deaf community, the Council worked with Victoria Police and Vicdeaf to develop a video on tips to keep cool in the home during a heatwave. The video includes an Auslan interpreter and subtitles and is being promoted on Council’s YouTube and social media:

Yarra City Council is keen to engage with the deaf community on emergency management planning and is looking at trialling emergency management classes in Auslan with Melbourne Polytechnic students next year.
