  • Cricket Australia has announced they will be removing the reference to ‘Australia Day’ in the promotions of their upcoming three Big Bash games.
  • Today the Victorian Premier has announced changes to the current COVID 19 restrictions including changes to hot spot locations in NSW and Queensland.
  • In Hobart, a cancer survivor who is homeless and living in a tent said her breast reconstruction surgery has been put on hold because of her living situation.
  • Yesterday, Joe Biden became the 46th President of the USA.
  • Yesterday, in Bulgaria, their Parliament adopted a law that recognizes the Bulgarian sign language as an official language.

  • Today is the 14th day in a row that Australia has reported no new COVID-19 cases through community transmission.
  • A report released today from Infrastructure Victoria says that workers returning to the city are driving rather than using public transport.
  • In Tasmania, the yearly Productivity Commission Report on Government Services found that child protection investigations are taking a long time to start and to get done.
  • Today America’s COVID-19 death toll passed 400 000.

  • Cyclone Kimi is expected to make landfall tonight in far north Queensland.
  • Today in Victoria, health authorities have confirmed the first active case of the virus in an Australian Open tennis player in hotel quarantine. 
  • Today is the 12th day of no new community transmission cases of COVID-19 in Victoria.

  • In 2014 Brent Phillips was called for jury duty and was keen to do it, but was not allowed do to Australia’s ‘13th person rule’.
  • On Saturday, a woman from Tasmania's north-west kayaking in Tasmania’s Franklin River needed to be rescued by a helicopter rescue team.
  • Last year, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was taken to Germany for medical treatment for Novichok poisoning.

  • Today, the Vodafone Brisbane cricket Test begins at the Gabba in Brisbane and will go ahead with a crowd capacity of 50%.
  • From 11.59pm Sunday 17th January mandatory mask wearing in Victoria in all indoor spaces will be eased.
  • Yesterday, police found a woman and her three children dead at a home in Tullamarine, Melbourne's north-west.
  • On Tuesday, a Tasmanian man was found allegedly murdered at his home West of Launceston.
  • Yesterday, in the US, the House of Representatives voted to impeach US President Trump.
  • In preparation for the inauguration on the 20th January security is in high alert in the US.

  • Queensland has found two new cases of COVID-19 overnight, both are in hotel quarantine.
  • Victoria has reported no cases from a local source, and three new overseas cases in quarantine.
  • Victorian Homicide Police are offering a $1million reward for information about the murder of a Ballarat woman in 1987.
  • Tasmania is again looking into to changing Tasmanian laws which allows parents to physically discipline their children.
  • Indonesian divers have found the black box from the plane that crashed into the ocean last weekend.
  • Today the US House of Representatives is voting on whether to impeach President Trump.

Key points:

  • Queensland will have their lockdown end at 6pm tonight, with wearing masks still mandatory for another 10 days.
  • In Victoria, there have been no new cases of Covid-19 from community transmissions for the 5th day in a row.
  • Friday last week, the private information of all Tasmanians who have called an ambulance since November 2020 was posted on the internet.
  • On Saturday, an Indonesian jet with 62 passengers crashed into the Java Sea shortly after take-off.
  • A new piece of impeachment legislation will be given to the American House of Representatives on Monday 11 January (US time).
