Deaf community members win big at ‘Miss Gay and Miss Transsexual Australia 2015’ beauty pageant
DEAF COMMUNITY MEMBERS KRISTA AND VICTORIA ARE NEW BEAUTY SYMBOLS IN AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST DRAG QUEEN AND TRANSGENDER PAGEANT
The only two Sydneysiders connected to the Deaf community who took part in this year’s ‘Miss Gay and Transsexual Australia 2015’ beauty pageant in Melbourne have won big.
Sydneysiders Krista Herrington (right), a 23-year-old disability worker, and Victoria Rivera Martin (left), a 24-year-old fashion designer, have clinched second place as ‘Miss Gay Australia 2015’ and ‘Miss Transsexual Australia 2015’, respectively, at the ‘Miss Gay and Miss Transsexual Australia 2015’ beauty pageant on Saturday night at the Yarraville Club in Melbourne. This makes them the first deaf and hearing-impaired contestants to take part, and, receive a major placing, in the history of the Australian pageant.
Ms Herrington said she hoped her victory would inspire other people with disabilities.
“As a deaf, gay and Aboriginal drag queen, the odds are stacked up against you even more,” said Ms Herrington, who also picked up ‘Best Mardi Gras Costume’.
“I was pleased with how far I went in the pageant. I believe the experience has given me more confidence to face the world proudly as a drag queen performer.
“I say to people with disabilities that you should never let your disability stand in the way of what you want to achieve in life.”
For another crowd favorite Ms Martin, taking part in the pageant has cemented her position as a serious beauty pageant enthusiast and contender. She won ‘Best Las Vegas Costume’, ‘Best in Swimsuit’ and ‘Miss Transsexual Congeniality’.
“Taking part in the pageant has allowed me to expand my cultural knowledge and social network,” said Ms Martin. “I had so much fun. My message is that the world is your oyster. Make the best of life and enjoy it.”
Both contestants used an Auslan interpretator in their on-stage interviews during the pageant.
Other Sydneysiders who took out prizes in the pageant included drag queen performer, Coco Foxx, who took out ‘Miss Gay Congeniality’; Cassandra Myles Cabelion, who cam in ‘Third Runner-Up’ and ‘Best in Evening Wear’ in ‘Miss Transsexual Australia 2015; and Cherry Teewara, who was named Fourth Runner-Up in ‘Miss Transsexual Australia 2015’.
