Community Forum - Media Access
Expression Australia hosted our first ever online Community Forum session to help us understand how the Deaf community receives critical information across media platforms. These included our ABC News Auslan segment, the Expression Australia’s Daily Auslan News and Auslan interpreted press conferences. We hosted the session on Thursday 18 June from 5:30pm to 7pm with over 100 people watching and and participating in the poll questions.
We asked the community what they think about our partnership with ABC News providing an Auslan interpreter for the Sunday evening national bulletin as well as the 2-minute Auslan segment. We received a high number of responses saying that they feel they are more informed watching the news presented in Auslan and that it is very important.
We asked the community about our Daily Auslan News. We have received plenty of positive responses saying that they feel more included and informed through receiving information in their first language. There was great feedback provided to us that will help us improve our delivery, quality and to include visuals instead of just signing.
We also asked the community what they think of Auslan interpreted press conferences, and we learned that the majority of the community do watch and engage with the press conferences. They said that they find it is essential for us to advocate to the government to provide Auslan interpreters at press conferences.
We want to show our appreciation to all who were involved and provided feedback to us on at the Community Forum. We will have more opportunities for you to give feedback on media access and our service in the future.
