Auslan Update - 26 July, 2021

From yesterday Victoria has recorded 11 new community transmission cases of COVID-19.

  • All of these have been in quarantine the whole time they have been infectious.
  • All 22 community cases announced over the weekend were also all in quarantine for the whole of their infectious period.
  • COVID-19 has been detected in sewage linked to the following areas:
  • Werribee, Tarneit, and Truganina between 21-23 July.
  • Glenroy, Hadfield, Oak Park, and Pascoe Vale between 20 to 22 July.
  • Anyone who lives, works, or has visited these areas within these dates is urged to watch for the slightest of COVID-19 symptoms and get tested as soon as possible if any symptoms develop.
  • Premier Daniel Andrews has said that Victoria is in a good position to ease restrictions at 11.59 pm tomorrow.
  • No official announcements have been made yet, authorities saying they will make the decision with the most UpToDate information possible tomorrow.
  • Authorities this morning asked Victorians to remember the importance of checking in via QR codes every time we enter a venue, to help contact tracers stay ahead of the virus.

Today NSW announced 145 new community cases, 51 of which were active in the community while infectious.

  • On Saturday thousands of anti-lockdown protesters took to the streets of Sydney shutting down the CBD, calling for an end to lockdown.
  • Health officials are concerned that the 5 000 protesters, many of whom were not wearing masks or social distancing, will worsen the current outbreak of the Delta strain of COVID-19.
  • 57 people were charged and over 90 infringement notices were handed out by police to people breaking COVID-19 restrictions.
  • Similar protests were held in Brisbane and Melbourne.

On Sunday in Sydney a 38-year-old woman passed away from COVID-19, the 8th person in NSW to pass away from this outbreak.

  • Health officials have said that the woman had no pre-existing health conditions.
  • NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and health authorities have said this is a reminder that the Delta strain of COVID-19 is more dangerous for young people than previous strains.
  • A teenager is also one of the 44 people currently in Intensive care (ICU) with the Delta strain.

Over the weekend the first events of the Tokyo Olympic Games took place.

  • Over the weekend Australia won gold in the women’s 4x100m Freestyle relay, silver in the Men’s 400m freestyle, and bronze in the 400m individual medley.
  • The women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team includes 19-year-old Meg Harris, who is partially deaf.
  • Today Emma McKeon won bronze in 100m butterfly and Ariarne Titmas has beaten close rival USA’s Katy Ledecky to win gold in the 400m women's freestyle.
