From 22 to 28 September 2025, we join Deaf communities across Australia to celebrate National Week of Deaf People (NWDP) and the International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL).

This year's theme - No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights - reminds us that Auslan is central to equality, access, and human rights.

Throughout the week, we'll share daily videos, stories, and reflections that highlight Deaf leadership, recognition of Auslan, access to services, and the power of our community to innovate, inspire and impact.

Daily Themes

Monday 22 September: Deaf Communities Leading
Deaf-led organisations and leaders play a vital role in advancing sign language rights. True progress happens when Deaf people lead with support from allies and governments.

Tuesday 23 September: International Day of Sign Languages/No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights
Sign languages are human rights. On IDSL, we celebrate Auslan and sign languages worldwide, recognising that equality and inclusion cannot exist without them.

Wednesday 24 September: Multilingual Education for Deaf Learners
Every Deaf learner has the right to quality education in their own language. Bilingual and multilingual approaches with Auslan at the core give Deaf children the best start in life.

Thursday 25 September: Deaf Rights in Crises
Access to information during emergencies saves lives. From bushfires and floods to health crises, Deaf people must be included in disaster planning, with Auslan used in all communications.

Friday 26 September: Recognition of National Sign Language
Auslan was recognised as a community language in 1991. Recognition is essential, but it must go further: ensuring Auslan is embedded across all areas of public life.

Saturday 27 September: Sign Language Access Services
Deaf people have the right to choose how they want to access information and events - through Auslan interpreters or captions. Access is not optional, it's a right - and we're committed to this.

Sunday 28 September: Set the Basis for the Future: Together We can Innovate, Inspire and Impact!
Deaf communities are innovators. From technology to arts to leaderships, Deaf people are shaping the future. We are committed to creating a world where Deaf people everywhere can innovate, inspire, and sign anywhere.
