CODA WA Resource Hub

Supporting Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs) in Western Australia

Welcome to the CODA WA resources hub, an initiative by Expression Australia. We provide a dedicated space for children who navigate the unique bilingual and bicultural world of growing up hearing in a Deaf family.

Since 2024, we have focused on building connection, resilience, and pride among CODAs through community events, workshops, and educational resources.

New for 2025: "Evie the CODA" Book Series

We are thrilled to introduce our new literary resource designed to bridge the gap between the Deaf and hearing worlds.

Meet Evie

Evie is the star of our series. She is a CODA who can hear, but her Mum and Dad are Deaf. Alongside her brother Cooper, her signing Dad, and her hearing grandparents (Grandma Strict and Poppy), Evie navigates school, friendships, and family life.

Series Scope

The series is designed to grow with the child, offering resources from early childhood through to adolescence:

  • Picture Books (Ages 5–6): Focusing on foundational concepts of family and health.
  • Chapter Books (Ages 9–13): Episodic adventure stories tackling more complex social themes.

The 7 Pillars of Wellness

The Evie the CODA series is not just about reading; it is a tool for holistic health. The stories align with the Seven Dimensions of Wellness, helping children manage the specific gaps they face in their dual-world experiences:

  1. Physical & Emotional: Nutrition, exercise, and developing a positive self-identity.
  2. Social: Establishing boundaries and understanding friendship dynamics.
  3. Occupational: Understanding teamwork and contribution.
  4. Environmental: How surroundings influence well-being.
  5. Spiritual: Exploring personal values and purpose.
  6. Financial: Promoting financial awareness.
  7. Intellectual: Fostering curiosity and learning.

Featured Title: The Language of Friendship In this story, Evie joins the "Hands in Harmony" sign language club and navigates the challenges of a science project with her friend Tara, learning that true communication goes beyond just words.

For Educators: Teacher Resource Manual

To support the inclusion of CODA experiences in the classroom, we have developed a comprehensive guide for educators.

  • Curriculum Alignment: The series aligns with Western Australian Department of Education values, fostering students to become responsible and ethical members of society.
  • Inclusivity Focus: The books feature diverse characters, including those with dyslexia, autism, and physical disabilities, normalising diversity in Australian schools.
  • Classroom Tools: Each book includes discussion questions and relevant Auslan vocabulary to support literacy and cultural learning.

Our Journey: Past, Present, and Future

2024: Building Our Community

Our foundation year was dedicated to connection and understanding.

  • Community Connection: We hosted major events, including a family day at Adventure World and gatherings in Bibra Lake and Fremantle, engaging over 175 participants.
  • Family Workshops: We facilitated intimate sessions to understand the unique journey of CODA families, fostering open communication and strengthening family bonds.
  • Playgroups: Monthly sessions provided a relaxed environment for children aged 0-6 to develop social skills and friendships.

2025: Resource Development

This year, we are addressing the critical gap in educational materials.

  • Launch of "Evie the CODA": Releasing the comprehensive reading series.
  • School Engagement: Delivering presentations to raise awareness among educators and peers about the CODA experience.

2026: Celebrating Multiculturalism

Looking ahead, our project will expand to include a new series of stories focusing on:

  • Multicultural Australia: Exploring the diverse backgrounds that make up our community.
  • Dates & Storytelling: Connecting cultural history and significant dates to the CODA narrative.
